Your King Comes Riding on a Donkey
'Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.' Zechariah 9:9 — written in the 6th century BC — describes an arrival scene that breaks every expectation of a conquering king. No war horse. No chariot. A donkey. He will take away chariots, war horses, and combat bows. He will proclaim peace to the nations. Five centuries later, Matthew and John both quote this verse as the prophecy fulfilled when Jesus enters Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. The week before the crucifixion begins with this image.
