Song of Solomon 2:8–17
Catch the Foxes Ruining Our Vineyard
'My beloved is mine and I am his — he grazes among the lilies.' She has been forced to work in her brothers' vineyards while neglecting her own. Now she gives a command: 'Catch for us the foxes, the little foxes that ruin the vineyards, our vineyards that are in bloom.' She waits for her lover to come leaping over the mountains, bounding over the hills. 'Until the day breaks and the shadows flee, turn, my beloved, and be like a gazelle or a young stag on the rugged hills.' The poetry of the book works by accumulation — each image building a world where love is the only thing that exists.
