At the city gate before the elders, Boaz confronts the closer kinsman who has first rights to redeem Naomi's land. When the man realizes he must also take Ruth the Moabite as his wife, he refuses — and removes his sandal as a public legal transfer. Boaz takes Ruth as his wife before all the witnesses of the city.

Now Boaz went up to the gate, and sat down there. Behold, the near kinsman of whom Boaz spoke came by. He said to him, “Come over here, friend, and sit down!” He came over, and sat down.
