The Massacre of Midian

God commands Moses to take vengeance on Midian. The Israelites kill all Midianite men and bring back the women and children. Moses is furious: "Why did you let all the women live?" He orders them to kill all the boys and all women who have slept with a man — only the virgin girls may be kept alive. The text then tallies the spoils: 675,000 sheep, 72,000 cattle, 61,000 donkeys, and 32,000 virgin girls.
