The Levite's Concubine

A Levite and his concubine shelter in Gibeah. Men of the city surround the house and demand the man be sent out for sex. The Levite pushes his concubine out the door. She is raped all night by the mob. At dawn she has collapsed at the doorstep. "Get up, let's go," he says — she doesn't answer. He loads her on his donkey and goes home. There, he takes a knife and cuts her body into twelve pieces, and sends one piece to each tribe of Israel.
