Jonah Furious That God Spares Nineveh

Jonah finally preaches in Nineveh: "Forty more days and Nineveh will be overturned." The entire city repents — even the king covers himself in sackcloth. God relents and does not destroy it. Jonah is furious: "I knew this would happen — that's why I fled to Tarshish! You are gracious and compassionate, slow to anger. Please take my life, for it is better for me to die than to live." Jonah goes outside the city and sits in the sun. The book ends with God asking: "Should I not have concern for the great city of Nineveh?"
