Jeremiah Curses the Day He Was Born

After being beaten and put in stocks, Jeremiah breaks into a lament unlike anything else in the prophets. He has been a laughingstock all day. He tried to stop prophesying but the word is 'like a fire shut up in my bones' that he cannot hold in. Then the confession: 'Cursed be the day I was born! Cursed be the man who brought my father the news. Why did I ever come out of the womb to see trouble and sorrow and to end my days in shame?' He does not curse God — he curses the day, the messenger, the midwife. The rage has nowhere left to go.
