Isaiah's Lips Touched with a Burning Coal

In the year King Uzziah died, Isaiah sees God seated on a throne so high and exalted that the hem of his robe fills the entire Temple. Six-winged seraphim fly around him, covering their faces and feet. They call to each other: 'Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.' The doorposts shake. Smoke fills the Temple. Isaiah cries out: 'I am ruined! I am a man of unclean lips, living among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.' A seraph flies to him with a live coal from the altar and touches his mouth: 'Your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.' Then God asks: 'Whom shall I send?' Isaiah answers: 'Here am I. Send me.'
