Jacob's Ladder

Fleeing his brother's murderous rage, Jacob sleeps on bare ground and dreams of a stairway reaching heaven, angels ascending and descending on it, and God standing above it — promising the land, countless descendants, and divine protection. He wakes terrified: "Surely God was in this place, and I did not know it."
