Genesis 16:1–16

Hagar Flees from Sarai

Sarai, unable to conceive, gives her slave Hagar to Abram as a concubine. When Hagar becomes pregnant, she despises her mistress. Sarai mistreats her so severely that Hagar flees into the desert. An angel finds her at a spring and commands her to return and submit. He announces her son will be named Ishmael — "a wild donkey of a man, his hand against everyone and everyone's hand against him." She must go back and give birth under her oppressor.
