The Ten Commandments

God's voice thunders the commandments from Sinai — among them a prohibition on images, a command to stone children who curse their parents, and permission for slavery. The thunder, lightning, and trumpet-blast are so overwhelming that all Israel trembles and begs Moses: speak to us yourself, for if God speaks directly to us we will die.
