Exodus 5:1–21
Bricks Without Straw
Moses and Aaron go to Pharaoh for the first time: "Let my people go." Pharaoh's response is to increase the workload — Israelites must now gather their own straw while maintaining the same brick quota. The foremen are beaten when they fail. They turn on Moses in despair: "You have made us stink in Pharaoh's eyes and put a sword in his hand to kill us."
