God Commands Genocide
When God brings Israel into Canaan, he commands them to utterly destroy seven nations: "make no treaty with them, and show them no mercy." Do not intermarry with them. Tear down their altars, smash their sacred stones, cut down their Asherah poles, burn their idols. The reason given: they would teach Israel to worship other gods.

When Yahweh your God brings you into the land where you go to possess it, and casts out many nations before you, the Hittite, the Girgashite, the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, seven nations greater and mightier than you;
