David Hands Saul's Descendants to Be Killed
A famine strikes Israel. God tells David it is punishment for Saul's breach of an oath to the Gibeonites. David asks what they require for atonement. Their answer: seven of Saul's male descendants, to be killed and exposed. David hands them over. Rizpah, concubine of Saul and mother of two of the men, spreads sackcloth on a rock and keeps watch over the decomposing bodies — driving away birds by day and wild animals by night — from barley harvest until rain falls from the sky.

There was a famine in the days of David for three years, year after year; and David sought the face of Yahweh. Yahweh said, “It is for Saul, and for his bloody house, because he put the Gibeonites to death.”
