Elijah Is Taken Alive into Heaven by a Chariot of Fire

As Elijah and Elisha walk together, a chariot of fire and horses of fire suddenly appear between them. A whirlwind lifts Elijah off the ground. He rises into the sky and is gone. Elisha watches it happen and cries out: 'My father, my father — the chariot of Israel and its horsemen!' He tears his clothes in two, picks up Elijah's fallen mantle, and strikes the Jordan with it. The water parts. He is now the prophet. Elijah never dies. He simply leaves.
