Israel demands a king like the other nations, rejecting God as their ruler. God grants their demand — and chooses Saul, a Benjaminite who was out searching for lost donkeys. Samuel pours oil on his head and tells him he will rule over God's inheritance. The man chosen to be Israel's first king never sought the crown.
