1 Samuel 5:1–12
The Ark Destroys the God of the Philistines
The Philistines place the captured Ark in the temple of their god Dagon. The next morning, Dagon's statue has fallen face-down before the Ark. They set it back up. The morning after, Dagon has fallen again — his head and hands broken off at the threshold. Then God's hand strikes Ashdod with devastating tumors. The Ark is moved from city to city, each struck with plague and tumors, until the Philistines cry out: "The Ark of Israel must not stay with us, for his hand is heavy on us and on Dagon our god."
