Elijah Flees Jezebel and Prays to Die

Hours after his greatest triumph — calling down fire, ending the drought, slaughtering 450 false prophets — Elijah receives a single message from Queen Jezebel: 'So may the gods do to me and more also, if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by tomorrow.' He runs. He runs a day's journey into the wilderness, sits down under a juniper tree, and asks God to let him die: 'It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life, for I am no better than my fathers.' He falls asleep. An angel wakes him twice with bread and water for the journey ahead.
