Wounded and Surrounded, Saul Impales Himself on His Own Sword

The Philistines rout Israel's army at Mount Gilboa. Three of Saul's sons are killed. The archers find Saul. He is badly wounded. He turns to his armor-bearer: 'Draw your sword and thrust me through with it, or these uncircumcised will come and abuse me.' The armor-bearer, terrified, refuses. So Saul takes his own sword and falls on it. When the armor-bearer sees that Saul is dead, he falls on his own sword too. Both die together on the same day. The first king of Israel ends his life in a panicked suicide on a battlefield, abandoned by God and surrounded by enemies.
